How to Calculate Net Run Rate (NRR) in Cricket?

Net Run Rate (NRR) plays a crucial role in modern cricket, as it often determines rankings and outcomes in tournaments. Calculating NRR is straightforward: it is the total number of runs a team scores divided by the total overs they face. The formula is:

Run Rate = Total Runs Scored / Total Overs Faced

Run rate serves as a key measure of a team’s scoring pace, particularly in limited-overs formats like One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 matches. It is also used to set or estimate the target score for a chasing team in such games.

For instance, Bangladesh participated in two matches during a tournament, facing Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Bangladesh’s score so far:
  • Against Afghanistan, scored 250 (for 5 wickets) from 50 overs.
  • Against Sri Lanka, scored 200 (for 10 wickets) from 40 overs.
As per the score, Bangladesh against Sri Lanka was all out in just 40 overs but the calculation will be in 50 overs.
Overall two games Bangladesh’s total score of (250+ 200) = 450 in a total of (50 + 50) = 100 overs. At the rate 450/ 100 =  4.50
Opposite team score so far against Bangladesh:
  • Afghanistan scored 251 (for 9 wickets) from 43 overs.
  • Sri Lanka scored 201 (for 3 wickets) from 40 overs.
Overall two games Bangladesh’s total score of (251 + 201) = 451 in a total of (43 + 40) = 83 overs. At the rate of 451/ 83 =  5.43
Net- run rate for Bangladesh (4.50 – 5.43) = – 0.93. For more information:
